Anupama Kundoo – Taking Time the fourth exhibition in the Architect’s Studio series at Louisiana, illustrates her belief that spending more time on thinking, research, knowledge sharing and building endows architects with a deeper understanding of context, materiality, function and sustainability. The exhibition runs until 31 January 2021 - SCROLL DOWN TO SEE MORE
Anupama Kundoo has first-hand knowledge of the workshop traditions that she rethinks. She has observed Indian artisans, learned from them and built with them. Kundoo designed both of her homes in the experimental Indian town Auroville so that they could be built without the use of machines and using only local materials.
Last year, Anupama Kundoo took part in a competition to build a new guesthouse at Krabbesholm Højskole. Her concept involved Kolumba and a description of both the project and the brick is included in the exhibition at Louisiana.

Petersen Tegl supplied 4,000 Junior and 1,200 broken Kolumba bricks for the Krabbesholm workshop. The bricks were laid with lime mortar, so that they could be removed again and re-used in later workshops. Photo: Martin Schubert
Brick at 3daysofdesign
Petersen Tegl took part in Denmark's annual design festival – 3daysofdesign – again this year. The setting was the Petersen Tegl Studio, which also marked its first anniversary at the same time.
This year, we asked two architects who have worked very closely with the brickworks to present their very different and exciting projects.
Architect Francesca Torzo talked about her latest work to reach completion. The façade and courtyard on Z33 – an extension to the House for Contemporary Art and Architecture in the Belgian town of Hasselt – are clad in specially moulded, handmade rhombus-shaped bricks.
Architect Kristian Winther of Arup talked about designing Cityringen (M3). Four of the stations on the new Metro line in Copenhagen have underground walls clad in a customised version of Kolumba.
The two projects and the specially developed bricks are on display in the Petersen Studio until 1 November.
Petersen Tegl takes part in the Danish design event, 3 DAYS OF DESIGN, in Copenhagen from the 3rd - 5th September 2020. Join us at PETERSEN TEGL STUDIO at Amerika Plads 25B. Opening hours 10:00 - 17:00.
‘Memories of Colour’
was the title of a web siminar on the teaching platform TIFA Institute on 3 July. The speakers were the artist Tanya Goel and the textile designer Mia Morikawa, both from India, and the Danish artist Malene Bach. The architect Peter Zinck represented Petersen Tegl. He talked about the natural colours found in brick and presented a range of projects in which various architects have used those colours to create buildings with a special look. Peter made his presentation from the Petersen Tegl Studio in Copenhagen.
New architecture award to Francesca Torzo
On 30 June, the architect Francesca Torzo had the great honour of receiving the first-ever Italian Architecture Prize, which is promoted by Fondazione MAXXI and Fondazione La Triennale di Milano, and sponsored by MIBACT.
The award recognises the best building project completed between January 2017 and December 2019 by an Italian designer or a studio based in Italy. The winner is Torzo’s “Z33 – House for Contemporary Art and Architecture” in Hasselt, Belgium.
In the words of the jury: “The project stood out due to its profound ability to interpret the history of the block and the buildings that surround it, as well the spatial and expressive intelligence shown in configuring it into an exhibition space perfectly suited to contemporary needs. The jury also underlined the precision and unique quality of the presentation, which both illuminated the construction process and conveyed the architect’s personality.”
Petersen Tegl and Francesca Torzo worked very closely together on the development of a custom-made brick for the façades. The rhombus-shaped brick was hand-moulded in a combination of German and Danish clay.
30 June architect Francesca Torzo received the first edition of the »Italian Architecture Prize«, promoted by Fondazione MAXXI and Fondazione La Triennale di Milano and sponsored by MIBACT. The award ceremony was held at the MAXXI Museum in Rome.
